Khartoum is the biggest city and the capital of Sudan. It is situated at the confluence of the Blue Nile, flowing west from Ethiopia, and the White Nile, flowing north from Lake Victoria. al-Mogran or al-Muqran is the place where the two Niles meet; the main Nile flows north towards the Mediterranean Sea and Egypt. Separated by the two Rivers Nile, Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis with a calculated population of more than 5 million inhabitants, consisting of Khartoum proper, and linked by bridges to Omdurman to the west and Khartoum to the North.

Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Sudan is when it deigns to cool just a tad, the lowest temperatures being in January, averaging 30°C. However, temperatures can halve at night from December to February, making travel a lot more bearable. In the desert itself, temperatures can go down quickly, with chilly winds whipping your fleeces and jackets will come out of your bag without any delay.

1. Hamed el-Nil Tomb
If you wish to experience a magnificent Sufi ritual, visit Hamed el-Nil Tomb every Friday afternoon. There you will be able to see a colourful local troupe of whirling dervishes of Sufi community stirs up the dust in the worship of Allah, at this imposing mausoleum situated in a large Islamic cemetery.
2. Camel Market
Camel Market is set on the far western edge of Khartoum. It is an amazing place, especially on Saturday, but unfortunately, you won’t get any public transport (a taxi will cost at least S£150). The majority of camels come from Darfur.
3. Nuba Wrestlers
In this Khartoum wrestling area, you’ll encounter traditional wrestlers going through their paces at nearly 4 pm on Fridays. The tournament attracts great number of spectators. Get there by taxi from the city centre.
4. White Nile Bridge
From the White Nile Bridge, the conflux of the White and Blue Niles can be seen. This bridge is a languid high point of the world's longest river. You can actually see each Nile’s different colours flowing side by side before mixing further downstream – however neither are blue or white!

Distance to the City Centre
The capital of Sudan, Khartoum is home to the famous Khartoum International Airport. However, the current facility is going to be replaced with one which will lie 40 km south of the centre of Khartoum.
Transport from Khartoum
Khartoum’s public transport is quite diverse - it consists of minibuses which cover mostly all destinations within the city and operate the whole day and late into the evening. Private taxis are available and fares can be negotiated. Motorised rickshaws, locally referred to as bajajs or rakshas, offer a cheaper mode of private transport. Rickshaws are best used only for short trips within the city of Khartoum.

- If flying to Khartoum for 3 days or more, it is strictly advised to get registered with the police - an additional blue coloured stamp and sticker will be placed on your passport - you might get in trouble if not done.
- You won’t find any ATMs there, so bring enough cash which could last your stay in Khartoum.
- As Khartoum is a city of permits and controls, consider hiring a travel agency to help you out in getting all required permits and also transportation.
- Carry concoctions, creams and a lot of water with you as the city’s climate cannot be underestimated - expect extreme dryness for sure.
