Faro is the southernmost city in mainland Portugal. During summer, Faro is a popular destination for sun-seekers from northern Europe and the UK, especially due to the presence of its international airport. Best Time To Visit
During the summer, especially July and August, Faro is crammed with tourists who are escaping for some sunny weather. During the spring, a large number of flights to Faro are booked for half-term breaks, around Easter. The night of the 24th and the day of the 25th are the celebrations of Liberation Day, which is full of music and festivities.

1. Ria Formosa
In Faro and Olhão you can enjoy and make the most of Ria Formosa through a boat trip, or other eco-tours and other activities to discover the nature and wildlife of this Natural Park.
2. Formosamar
Open every day throughout the year, starting at 09:00 am, Formosamar is a famous ecotourism company which organizes exciting boat trips and ecotourism activities in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. There are several options to choose from, including birdwatching tours on traditional boats and boat trips to the Deserta Island and the Farol Island on a catamaran.
3. Faro Beach
This beach is several kilometres long and so normally never gets crowded, even in the height of summer. Most of the beach is gently sloping though it can take a sudden dip in places. There are a public lavatory and usual beach-side stalls, but no showers.
4. Old Town
A well-preserved section of town off the harbour with cobblestone streets and 18th century Portuguese and Moorish-influenced architecture. It is a great place for a peaceful and almost private walk back in time in an area that has been virtually untouched by modernity.
5. Faro Jewish Heritage Centre
Officially constructed in 1851, the Faro Jewish Cemetery is the only remaining vestige of the first post-Inquisition Jewish presence in Portugal. The Faro Jewish Heritage Centre offers more than a hundred graves in Sephardi style, with beautifully engraved slabs.

Distance to the City Centre
The airport is about 7 km located in Faro’s western area, and although there are bus and train options, renting a car is highly suggested for the Algarve area. Choose travelling by a bus as it takes only 20 minutes to reach the downtown Faro from the airport.
Transport from Faro
Faro has a good network of trains and buses for shuttling you from beach to beach, making it easy to get from beach town to beach town. There are a few buses that take passengers directly from Faro airport to other famous destinations along the Algarve.

- The second half of Spring and the beginning of Autumn are considered the peak seasons - to save a little more on accommodation, book your hotel/resort room in advance.
